  • Existing Accounts & Steam

    Hey everyone,

As some of you may know, when a game is launched on Steam, payment of microtransactions (in our case gold purchases and subscriptions) in the Steam version of the game have to be handled via Steam wallet. No other payment options are allowed and Steam takes a significant portion of those transactions (we can’t disclose the number but you can probably google it) as payment for services rendered.

This makes sense for a business when when you acquire new players via Steam, but in our case we already have a large existing player base who is primarily financing Albion Online via gold packs and subscriptions.

We don’t have the option of increasing the price of gold and subscriptions on Steam to compensate for the share Steam would take, so by moving existing players to Steam we would lose a significant amount of our current monthly income. This would directly result in a reduced budget for developing the game.

This is why we’ve had to decide that it will not be possible to use existing Albion accounts to play on Steam - a decision many other MMOs going to Steam have had to make as well.

We are not happy about this, and would have liked a different outcome, but do not see any valid alternative right now.

We have updated the FAQ accordingly.

    Sincerely,

    Robin ‘Eltharyon’ Henkys

Note: Manually adding games to Steam

It is possible to manually add existing games to Steam without purchasing them on Steam. If you do it this way, you can use pre-existing accounts within Steam as well.

This allows you to launch the game from Steam as usual, and allows your friends to see what you are playing.

Here is how to do it: support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2219-YDJV-5557

There is a small downside to this though: you will not be able to get the in-Steam achievements this way. To mitigate this problem, we have duplicated all Steam achievements within the normal in-game achievement system - meaning that you can still get all these achievements without having the Steam version of the game. While is not the perfect solution, we hope that it helps.
  • I do not want to be negative but... We as founders and non-steam players will give better value per purchased gold. You cannot ask for more from Steam "We don’t have the option of increasing the price of gold and subscriptions on Steam to compensate for the share Steam would take" but you can give us more (relatively speaking) if we buy from your website, no?
  • i actually play path of exile on steam but allways buy my things true their main website..;

when poe got on steam i could just log in / link my main account... i really don't see how this could not be done here >.>

Try whatever tricks you want. I’ll just straight up kill you and resolve the issue once and for all.
  • If Steam boost Albion population in about the same percentage they charge per transaction, then your income will stay the same.

If Steam boost Albion population in a number above the percentage they ask for transactions, you will have higher income.

If Steam boost the population in less then what they charge, then you are making a mistake by moving there.

In all of the cases i dont see why the people who made the game developing possible since the begining of the game should be punished by having to rebuy the game.

As a Founder, i feel cheated by the company.

This announcement still seems like a lame excuse to me.
Artificial intelligence will never beat natural stupidiy.

Is there some advantage to launching the game through Steam, instead of double clicking the AO icon on my desktop?

I don't understand why this would even be a problem. Can someone please enlighten me?
As an example, say I have $5k in my steam wallet from selling CS/PUBG skins. I could spend that on gold if I could link my account.

i doubt steam would allow this.

I'm confused, does this mean we won't see new steam players playing with us?
    No, they'll totally be there.

  • Well, the money I have in my steam account, standing there and picking up dust, will continue in steam account!
Good luck, I hope you are prepared for the players' ratings.

ps: You need to listen to your current community and trying to have the game more balanced, before launching the steam platform.

Do they have a say for people who are outside their ecosystem?

That is kinda why I asked about Founder and Starter status. Keep these separated but give us more value per dollar.

Make a new "Steamer" status who get the benefits of Steam but "little" less value per dollar due to Steam taking a cut. It does not need to be that 30%... Maybe 15%?

We will not be able to use Steam credits. Steam accounts will not be able to purchase gold from the AO website. Makes sense to me. Not sure if it is legally possible. I leave that to lawyers :D

I'm confused about exactly what this means. Is the population being split, or is it just that since I log in with the client now, I will always have to log in with it unless I start a new account?

Yeah, makes really sense, I have played the beta and then never again, because not only one of my friends was playing it, now it comes on steam, my friends want buy it to compete who has the most achievements, and now I must buy it again?
Forget it, I would love to pay monthly but no, not if I need to buy the game again...

This was the last game I have bought from its own website, the one before was "Black Desert Online" and they are too stupid to give steam keys out, too !!!
