  • City Issue: Fort Sterling & Co overcrowded.

As you noticed especially the 5 cities around Caerleon are highly crowded and are suffering from extreme lag.

    Two things happened
    • After many complaints yesterday we increased the server queue today so more people can play.
    • At the same time a lot of people progressed from the 10 outer towns into the 5 inner towns.
With our daily maintenance tomorrow we will make a few technical adjustments, so these cities will be able to handle the load better and in addition we will reduce the amount of people being able to enter the city.

    Kind regards,
    Stefan
  • For the love of ao, plz don't do that. Moving around the city might be shit but halting progression because u can't go in the city is fubar. Seriously just decrease the amount of time people can afk before getting logged off. The amount of bank sitting is fucking ridiculous in ft. Sterling... Just imo
  • And what do you propose as a solution to those of us who have guild and personal islands at Ft. Sterling? Are we just SoL when we want to get to our islands and can't enter the city? Doesn't sound like a viable long-term solution. A queue to get into the city? No thanks. Move out islands? No way to do that without demolishing and starting from scratch.
  • And here is your problem of game design. You took away all the black zone cities (fine whatever) and then you make one city to rule them all on the royal continent. It is the only way to get into the black zone. It is the only city with a black market vendor and the only city close to high tier resources. Other cities are mildly attractive in comparison and the never ending march towards Caerleon. So seeing these outlying cities overloaded is just the start as more people push into smaller spaces.

At this point even the starting towns show up as overloaded and you can't see people. You guys have some major problems when it comes to server population and how the game design moves people all towards one place. Even the most effective way to farm resources is to just stand there and wait for them to respawn because if you run around everyone is just doing that to every other node. Dungeons are overrun to point of them not having a point and your best bet is to do the instanced dungeons from the town portal not because that's what we want to do but because it's better then fighting 300+ people over the same mob.

  • Just to put it in perspective.

It is technically not possible that unlimited people can enter the city.
So there is already a limit which is currently at 1400.
We might make that 1000 or 1200 -> that depends on some testing we will do tomorrow. Cause with 1400 it becomes unplayable for many people.

Keep in mind that right now there were two cities with above 1000 for around 1,5h during the peak time.
Also keep in mind that a certain overald can have other impacts on other areas of the game.

    Kind regards,
    Stefan

So why can't you instance it? I don't get it, otherwise you're going to be locking people out of parts of the game and if the game continues to be popular this is going to end up pretty frustrating.

Bercilak, what will happen to caerleon? Now, people progressed from outer cities to 5 middle cities. What will happen when people progress from 5 middle cities to 1 inner city? Being locked out of caerleon is more troublesome than blue cities.
    • Caerleon is divided into 3 parts on 3 different servers (the bank and the auction house are underground in different areas)
    • Its a different story since it is surrounded by a pvp area.
It is hard for us to forcast how these numbers will develop. So far and from my experience the first week is always the strongest in any MMO and things calm down a bit after that first week/two weeks. And then we take it from there and see what the best solution is for everybody in the long run.

    This.

Let's not ask the developers to make borderline permanent changes to a game based on the trends from the first 4 days of the game.

Also, instanced towns really gut the MMO feeling from a game in my opinion, would not really like to see that unless it was temporary, but I can't see the justification in building such a complex solution only to remove it later on.

Thanks, Bercilak - Really appreciate the work. I understand what your team is up against and you seem to be handling it like champs.

Yeah, it's something you build during 4 years of paid testing.
    1. Devs stated their intent was to always have a mega server, not instances or separate servers
    2. This would have either had to have been a problem in initial testing or they would have had to anticipate this being a persistent issue on launch. You don't just build a feature for the sake of it. Hindsight is 20/20. We also don't know if this will be a persistent issue. Simple math will tell it won't be.

Also, again, you guys are asking for permanent fixes to temporary issues.

    This. This. This.

Make the world bigger, add a new continent including starter zones if you want... Do not change a wonderful game design and mechanics just because it is overloaded the first week.
