Is it allowed to scan your internet trafic and pick up logs

What OP is describing is very shady.

Basically building a database with the info posted in the OP you are creating a global AH that only you can view. You can see all the listings across the entire game as if each trader was linked together.

I'm sure a few on here play Elder Scrolls Online. It has a decentralized auction house where nothing is linked together.

That game does openly support add-ons and there is a particular add-on that essentially scans every store in the game and uploads the information to a website where you can search in real time what is listed.
lol if the guy shares it with everyone once its working, then there won't be an issue then because everyone can get it if they want it.

Well it defeats the entire purpose of a decentralized system, which was a main point/draw of this game. All of that is rendered moot with this.

Nop @MrMovl we don't know, api are not priority right now.
Hey @FoxFour, you still working on this??
@Dragnark Yes I am. I stopped for a while but not that the game has launched I have picked it back up. You can see my recent activity on the client repo: github.com/Regner/albionmarket-client/

My current biggest issue is tracking the characters location. I was really hoping to find the location in the request for market data or the response but it isn't there.

    Hey guys,

first of all thank you for asking before actually doing anything.

Our position is quite simple. As long as you just look and analyze we are ok with it. The moment you modify or manipulate something or somehow interfere with our services we will react (e.g. perma-ban, take legal action, whatever).

As some of you have already pointed out, using WireShark or silimar tools to analyze network traffic is undetectable from our end and we therefore do not consider it an offense. The network packets do not contain any secret information, it is basically all stuff you can see on screen in the game in some form. If you wanna build a tool based on that - fine.

HOWEVER, any manipulation of the client or any form of "bot" will not be tolerated. E.g. if you are playing with the idea to automatically pull data from ingame marketplaces in regular intervals - yeah, that is a bot. This bot would produce traffic and data access on our end and therefor we cannot allow this.

And before you ask - yes, some form of API is still on our roadmap, but I cannot give you an ETA on that. We have already added statistics and the kill boards to the web site and we will continue to add stuff like that in the future.

    Hope this clarifies it.

    David
    Is this still the position?

The site is up and running, the code is on GitHub and is clean. The client does nothing but read traffic, and only when you manually go to the marketplace, so its not automating the pulling.

I would like to use it to help my daily economic reports be more flexible and gather data faster, but I don't want a ban.
  • @MadDave Hey, I have been told that your guys stance on this may have changed. Is that the case? Someone mentioned something being said in Discord about not being allowed to look at network packets. Hoping your policy hasn't changed and that if it does change you will mention it on the forums in some capacity. :)

  • For those following along and wanting to know whats up with being allowed to monitor network packets I am continuing to message mods on Discord to see whats up. Essentially we got the post in this thread from @MadDave that said we are allowed to, then a few days ago a mod on Discord said no. I have messaged that mod who has directed me to someone else. Fun times. :P

I obviously don't speak for SI or anyone else at all actually, but I consider a public forum post that can be linked to and referenced more official a position than a message in a Discord channel. So until there is an official post about not being allowed to monitor network packets I am continuing to develop the market client I am working on.

  • Drizzle,

Market analysis is 100% part of playing AO.

We just want the ability to take the data we manually go get and have it show up in a spreadsheet without having to type it in manually.

So we would still visit each market, just anything we look at the network reader would enter into a file for processing however you want.

Fox nor I want to automate this culling.

Why can people not just play a game anymore?
Everybody plays the game differently. For me playing games is often about building these kind of tools It is what I love doing. Building great tools that others get to use. Some people enjoy PvP. Some people enjoy playing the market. Those that like playing the market without tools like this spend more time in spreadsheets rather than moving items and being in the client. All tools like what i am working on do is let people play the game more rather then build spreadsheets. Or in some cases helps them build crazier spreadsheets... but thats because everyone is different! :D

  • Update: Regarding 3rd Party Software and Network Traffic (aka: do not cheat.) [Update: 16:45 UTC, 26.02.20]

    Mytherceria wrote:

    Hey there,

Sometimes cheat makers claim that their tools are allowed. Don't believe them. We want to make sure you are aware what additional tools you are allowed to use and which not. The following is most definitely not allowed:
    • Anything that gives you a direct benefit in PvE, gathering, or PvP is not allowed. For example, this includes any type of auto-inspect tool or any type of radar tool that displays the in-game nametags on a separate minimap. It would also include any type of "auto-scouting" tool that generates a discord message if it spots a player or something like that.
    • In general, anything that modifies the game client, for example through automated scripts, or by displaying extra information to the player in the client, is not allowed.
    • When it comes to data gathering / data mining, we are usually fine with a website aggregating Albion market data if they do so
      • i) using technical means approved by us, and
      • ii) without negatively affecting our servers when collecting the data, and
      • iii) as long as the data is made available on a website and not, for example, through an in-game modification or overlay, and
      • iv) if it does not provide a real-time in-game advantage.
There are of course a number of cases of "clearly okay" and "clearly cheating", there are also a limitless number of possible fringe cases. Thus: if you are unsure if a certain type of software or tool is allowed or not to be used with Albion Online, please ask us, telling us exactly what specific thing you'd like to use or do. Because if you use a prohibited tool, we will ban you.

    How to ask?

Please email support@albiononline.com with the name and details of the software or specific thing you'd like to use or do, and they will respond accordingly.

    Happy Friday! ^^

    Hi everyone,

Seeing as there has been a fair amount of interest in this topic, we have decided to move all requests to clarify what is and isn't allowed to support@albiononline.com

Just to give you some examples: Albion Online 2D and Albion Data Project are generally ok to use for now, but if the scope of the software changes in the future, then please be aware that our stance on it might change too. So when in doubt, always check with in with support.

We have also reviewed that posting links to said software in this thread may not be the appropriate channel to address this. Therefore, I have removed those links from your posts and closed this thread.

Please contact support if you wish seek clarification on a specific software.
