It's current state is a gold pit. I don't mean to say SI did this purposely, but it nonetheless is. Every class of weapon and armor requires it's own individual leveling, which is ridiculously expensive and it pretty much isn't possible from one's own gathering efforts. It is possible to have a handful of weapon or armor classes maxed out, but only if one focuses on specific items. I don't think it's fair that SI makes players choose what they need to focus on. I'm not saying it shouldn't be a grind, it's just it's TOO MUCH of a grind.
My sense of power is not just being able to wear as many different kinds of 8.3 gear as I can, but being able to make as many different kinds of 8.3 gear as I can; because the way I see it is, when that happens, your power will come from me too!

Here is how I would do it (the following would not apply to individual item fame leveling, only the nodes that allow for higher tiers of gear to be made)
Option 1 (this one is the more grindier of my options in case you still want that effort. However, I do understand that this option may not fit into what may be your overall destiny board layout design, but I did my best to bring both together based on my observations of it's current overall design while still making it less grindy)

      Armor:
if i level any helmet, i level all helmets
if i level any chest piece, i level all chest pieces
if i level any boot, i level all boots
      combine accessories and gathering tools

      Weapons:
if i level any warrior weapon, i level all warrior weapons
if i level any hunter weapon, i level all hunter weapons
if i level any mage weapon, i level all mage weapons
      combine all off-hands

      Or:

Option 2 (this option may better fit into how warrior weapons and armors get separated from hunter weapons and so forth, but would require the system to be overly simplistic)

if i level any warrior item, i level all warrior items
      same for mage and hunter

As you can see (at least for the first option), that it's still quite a bit if one wanted to max out everything. I feel this is more in line with how fast one can wear multiple (key word) items of 8.3 gear vs what it takes to make multiple items of 8.3 gear, especially when those multiple items are of different class. Remember, crafting is actually two grinds (and maybe 3 or 4 depending on how many different resources the item requires), gathering AND crafting.

I hope this is at least food for thought, thanks!

    • Well its not that hard to get one or multiple crafting nodes to t8 to be able to craft 8.3. You will however need spec to reduce cost of focus and to get higher qualities. If you just want to craft 8.3 buy t4 resource in bulk, craft/learn them and get to t8. This will unlock t8.3 crafting for you. I have to check the prices on that, but i would say getting one node to t8 is less then 10m for sure. That is not really a huge amount of money for one time investment so a no from me for both points 1 and 2.

Good god no! The game doesnt need to be dumbed down. If anything more diversity and specialisation is needed, not less.

this is what I meant. you can do it, but it's expensive and I'm coming from a broader perspective of gathering and crafting because that's the main thing I enjoy doing. im not against there being a barrier, but I feel the barrier is already the gathering grind and how long it takes to have t8 tools (especially if ur a solo player and don't have the support to farm in high tier BZs). that should be the barrier, not the crafting system itself imo.

but i guess in the end it prolly doesn't matter because most people just do it in a "as needed" sort of manner

    • Well its an MMO with a grind so if you want to do everything at highest level it should take for a long time. The gathering is not that bad of a grind if you use mists and can be done alone. I know guys who started 3-4 months ago and dont gather that much, but can get t8 stuff. The issue with gathering is the barrier is that you can bypass it by just going to a market and buying those resources. So the crafting has to have a barrier. The barrier is not even that much for crafting at the moment, you just have to decide to lose some money and voila, one time investment of x amount of silver will give you the t8 crafting unlocked for ever.
