Take advantage of the mists to travel to low populated areas of the black zone or hunt for aspects in the mists. Also with the increase in red zones combined with everyone being pre-occupied with the new faction warfare mechanics you will find very few red flagged players in the red zones currently.

join a guild that owns a territory and has security for gathering parties
my guild occasionally run gathering trips 4-5 zones out with gankers a body guards
the gatherers act as bait and gather at the same time while the gankers hide and wait for the trap to be sprung
works wonders when you gather in t8/t7 zones but have to be careful not to touch the hornet's nest or else a zerg will come out
Trust me it is fun gathering in ARCH territory or any of the other big guild territory with contact every 10 mins or soThe Tank Who Bonks
