I plan on getting a Direbear with high weight capacity for this purpose- I like to gather everything. Is it viable to have like 5 different sets of gear on hand in blue/ zones? The idea is to not have to always return to town to switch gear when I tire of skinning and want to mine, ect.
is carrying around various forms of gathering gear around viable?

you still have to wait 10 minutes to get the full effect of the gathering gear, look at avalonian tools if you want bonuses without the wait

Since most zones are limited to only 3 types of resources, I generally carry on;y 3 different tools at a time. This means I generally cary pick, hammer, and axe on some trips and Sickle, knife and axe on others.
I don;t use any resource specific gear except for fishing seems too much hassle to me..Learn something new every day. -
Carry the 3 tools for the biome, work out the gathering bonus you need to make x2-3 and then match your gear to the resource you want to take the most of, then if you have any % left use a different piece of gear, switching gear takes far too long.
