There's nothing that prevents you from refining with focus even at low spec, it's just less silver/focus since you use more. Usually refining without focus isn't that great. Well I would definitely be processing your own gathering journals if you're filling them. No use paying the sales tax if you can vertically integrate. Laborers are a long-term investment but yeah as many as you can afford is probably a good idea. You can recoup 90% of the blocks used in houses if you ever do dismantle them and the furniture can just be picked back up.

I definitely support focusing on one resource since you can only wear one set of gather gear at a time. Some people do fame up alternative resource types and carry spare tools to gather enchanted resources though. Honestly if you refine in Martlock you should make money. The hides will sell for more in Martlock anyway, since the city has the bonus for hide refining.
