Why Craft? Quality and books. Crafters make higher quality gear which sells for more versus normal gear. Masterpieces are the ultimate quality, and that is only available to crafters. Crafters craft to make masterpieces. If something sells for less than the resource value, well I don't craft it then. Crafting fills books, which sell for good silver, but can also be processed for even more resources through laborers. This allows the cycle to repeat, yielding more higher quality crafts. People despise merc books because of the amount of silver they bring, relative to the cost of the upgrades required to process higher tiers. What people fail to consider is how EASY these books are to fill. Give a stack to each member of your party, go FF. Now you have oodles of books to process. The best books are crafting books, as they return refined resources, but they require resources to craft with in order to fill.
