Any decent soloer will tell you that the real thrill from soloing comes when you kill more than one person at a time (taking outnumbered fights). You are guaranteed NOT to have more than 2 enemies in a 2man HG. I just ran 5 of them (Friday 5-6pm EST), and I encountered 2 different solo players (1 bloodletter, 1 dagger pair). I have a feeling that if SBI implemented 1v1 HGs, people would QQ about getting ganked by multiples while trying to port in, and the myriad of bloodletters that would enter …

There's not really any hesitation. It's largely going to depend on how much you actually enjoy the gathering aspect. There are a ridiculous amount of ways to earn silver in this game, and you just have to find a way that you enjoy. Joining a decent guild is going to play a large part of your experience as a new player. The first couple of weeks is just going to be a learning curve.

You can do that, it just may not be quite as efficient as you're expecting. You'll have to enjoy the gathering bit to make it work, otherwise you could probably make more money (to buy armor/weps) by doing other things. You'll want to spend Learning Points on gathering, if you plan on going past T5 tools.

I think ping would affect when the cast starts, but not how long the cast takes.

buying directly from developer is "better" for the game and its creators buying through steam might be "better" if you have Steam Currency (idk what its called) that you'd like to spend

Did you try removing your SD card first?

I'd be okay with the ability to hide helm & cloak.

30% is a reasonable tax imo... i happily pay it when crafting in ft sterling.

It really depends on what you're trying to do... solo? 5v5? zerg? the 1h spear is pretty universal... glaive is more of a 5man thing imo I'd recommend running Stalker Hood/Soldier Armor... if you're in a group of 5+, then you could run Assassin Jacket instead of the armor.
